K-PAL athletes bring home Maui gold 2006
The Kaua‘i Police Activities League fared well on Maui
over the weekend.
Lucas Gushikuma led the Pit, Hit, and Run contingent with a 705-point total as
KPAL competitors earned three medals, two golds and a silver, at the state
championships.
Gushikuma competed in the 9-10
Age Group. Nick Penzetta competed in the 7-8 Age Group and earned 592 points for
a gold medal in that division, edging out silver medalists Micah Layosa by a
mere four points.
The point totals garnered by the Kaua‘i medalists will be used to determine if
they qualify to participate in the national competition.
In the wrestling arena, K-PAL wrestlers finished the state AAU Wrestling
Championships with a 7th overall team placement out of 25 teams competing.
Enroute to their team standings, K-PAL wrestlers earned three gold medals as
Thomas Yam topped the Elementary School Menehune Division in the Heavyweight
class.
Richard Kaui of Eastside took gold in the Middle School Novice division,
120-pound class, and Ekolu Yam, another Eastside wrestler, topped the High
School Elite Division, 145-pound class.
Archilles Singsong of the Westside took gold in the High School Elite, 160-pound
class.
Keenan Kaya, a Central K-PAL wrestler, lost his gold by a 6-5 showing to lead
the silver medalists from Kaua‘i in the Elementary School Midget Division,
55-pound class.
Kaua‘i earned five silver medals with Kalia Kaui of the Eastside following
Kaya in the Elementary School Midget Division, Boys & Girls Mixed,
Heavyweight class.
Trevor Bonilla of the Eastside got silver in the Middle School, Boys, 150-pound
class with Central wrestler Gage Gusman taking silver in the High School Elite,
170-pound class.
Eastside coach Nathan Fleming earned silver in the Adult Mens Open Division,
Light Heavyweight class.
K-PAL wrestlers also earned five bronze medals with Christopher Yam taking the
first of five in the Elementary School Bantam, 65-pound class.
Kristen Yam of the Eastside took a bronze medal in the Elementary School Midget,
Boys & Girls Mixed, 100-pound class followed by Ikaika Kiilau taking bronze
in the High School Elite, 145-pound class. Jacob Jimenez of the Westside program
took bronze in the High School Elite, 170-pound class with Eastside coach Luther
Yam earning bronze in the Adult Mens Open Division, Heavyweight class.
Matthew Jimenez finished fourth in the High School Elite, 135-pound class, and
Ekolu Yam finished fourth in the High School Elite, 145-pound class to round out
the finalists from Kaua‘i.
