Garden Island Cage Match #2

Kapaa High School Gym, Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii

August 20, 2005

By Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com

Kauai fight fans are huge supporters of “Kauaiian” fighters, enough to sell out the Kapaa High School gymnasium, packing in about 1200 fight fans.  This event had it all, MMA, kickboxing and submission grappling.  The event was held in a cage, which changes the dynamics of the kickboxing and it was interesting to see the submission grapplers try to use the cage.  Kauai’s fighters did not fair too well overall winning two out of ten matches pitting fighters from Kauai versus fighters from Oahu, with the exception of one fighter from Frank Shamrock’s academy in California.  This event also featured the first ever women’s kickboxing match on Kauai.  It pitted MMA fighter Molly Helsel taking on Pat Cortez Kickboxer Rhiannon Morales.  Both ladies mixed it up with great exchanges.  Morales’ height advantage could have proved to be a factor in the fight, but Helsel’s experience paid off earning her a unanimous decision.  A fighter to keep an eye on is the Bull’s Pen’s Tim Lapitan.  Lapitan showed incredible hand skills picking apart boxer Kainoa Silva.  After the fight, it was announced that Lapitan is only 16 years old.  This kid will go far.  Another great fight, possibly the fight of the night, was the kickboxing bout pitting Jumar Dumalao and Isaac Josiah.  Like the ladies bout, Josiah’s height advantage could have proved to be a factor, except for the fact that almost every opponent that Dumalao has fought has been taller.  Dumalao did a great job of closing the distance, getting inside and landing punches on his way to a majority decision.

In MMA action, Eric Marino landed more punches than Aaron Rose to win the decision.  A powerhouse, Tesai Seamster picked up and slammed the ill equipped Zack Naea and mauled him until taking his back and punching until the referee put a halt to the action.  Your humble MMA servant extraordinaire made his MMA refereeing debut when talented, young upstart Lebeau Lagmay took on a menacing looking Odell Mixon from Frank Shamrock’s academy.  Mixon looked to stun Lagmay with a right hand sending him to the canvas, but Lagmay recovered quickly and took down Mixon.  Lagmay pounded on Odell working his way into the back mount, where he threw punches in order to set up a rear naked choke for the submission.  In the main event, King of the Cage veteran and Kauai native, Eben Kaneshiro took on a game Rob Villapando from the 808 Fight Factory.  Villapando imposed his game through out the bout, striking to set up a shot, taking down Kaneshiro and ground and pounding him.  Kaneshiro, a BJJ black belt almost caught Villapando in a triangle and a couple of tight arm locks, but Villapando gutted it out and slipped out of them.  Just when Villapando looked to possibly end the fight by landing numerous hard punches from inside Kaneshiro’s guard, Kaneshiro showed why he is a BJJ black belt and locked up a triangle.  Villapando tried one last ditch effort to roll out of it, but it tightened and Villapando had to tap out, giving Kaneshiro the win and bringing Kauai fight fans to their feet.
