KMA- First of all Taurus why don’t you tell me how you got started in martial arts.
Taurus-From a young kid my mom guy, my mom was kind of crazy. Old school style, every time we used to get in trouble with the neighborhood kids my mom used to make use get together in the back yard and scrap it out. The guys family would be on one side of the field and my family would be on the other side and we would have a little scap going on.
KMA- What is you record right now? I did some research on you on Sherdog but they only had 2 of your fights listed.
Taurus- Right now my pro record is 4-0. My amateur record is 7-0, my pro kickboxing record is 14-0.
KMA- Out of all the fights you had which one do you think was the hardest?
Taurus- The hardest fight I had was the fight with myself. That was the hardest fight of them all. The physical fighting wasn’t the hardest one of them all. I lost, I lost, I won, I won. The hardest one was struggling with everyday life, the things that was going through my mind, going through my emotional trips.
KMA-You talked about having a hard life, about going through emotional trials. Do you think that fuels you?
Taurus- Most definitely in helps fuel the fire. As you watch the world of mixed martial art, take the UFC, you look at all these up and coming fighters and you can that they were bred from the gym. When I say bred from the gym I mean they were thought how to fight in the gym. People like me I was bred on the streets, I was bred on surviving. I came from a very poor family, I came from a family of 3 girls and I was the only boy. I had to be the father when we lost our dad when I was about 14 years old, so I placed a big burden upon my shoulder. As you can see there’s a difference in the way I fight and the way some other people fight. My fighting is real, the gym is just to sharpen it up just a little bit. What I feel makes a great fighter is a fighter that fights with a lot of passion. To really hurt someone, to be a good fighter you have to know how to heal someone too. I think there’s a balance with that.
KMA- Today in MMA there seems to be more and more fighters that fight not to lose. By this I mean fighters who take their opponents down and ride them out for a win rather than fighting to finish the opponent. It is refreshing to see fighters like you that fight to win. What are your feeling about this?
Taurus- The main point of fighting is not to win, to lose, to me it’s trying to prove a point to yourself. Just taking the initiative to get into a confrontation takes a lot. I give props to any fighter that steps into the ring, it’s a tough sport, it’s a rough sport. What makes it even more intense is that there are millions of spectators watching, all of this piled up on a fighter can take it’s toll. Yeah I think some fights are really boring because people say “hey this guys going for an armbar so let me try and counter this with my own arm bar” hell no, I there to knock someone out hard, quick, as fast as possible because I’m not here to win or lose, I’m here to make a point.
KMA- You have fought a lot in the mainland, have you been offered any fights in some of the bigger show in Pride, Elite XC or the UFC?
Taurus- I just signed a contract (name of organization withheld for now), my contract starts in 2 months. I was supposed to be on the Ultimate Fighter but Kendall Groves took my position, I could go to it because I was on parole. Thank God a Hawaiian went up there and he represented and he brought it home. I had a lot of offers and I turned down a lot of offer because I’m not into the limelight of this fighting stuff, I just a scapper brah. I love to scrap, I love to ****** scrap, sorry about my language. Fighting is my bread and butter. Win or lose I don’t care, I’m coming and I’m coming hard.
KMA-Did you hear about the possibility of Pride being sold to the UFC? If you had a choice on fighting in Japan or the US what would it be?
Taurus-The rumors of Pride being bought are not true, Pride just paid 56 million dollars to Dana White to make a contract with the UFC so now Dana White is working with the owner in Japan, Pride and they will be in the US because of this contract. Being a fighter I'm also involved in a lot of activity movements with mixed martial arts, I'm not just a fighter I try to use my brain and I keep everything updated. My promoter is Rick Bassman he's been helping me a lot with promotions, he's part owner of WWE wrestling. He's a pretty big man in MMA and he has contracts with Pride and he is friends with the owners. Next month I fight in England, I want to fight all over the world. I don't want to fight too much here in Hawaii because these Hawaiians are my brothers. I'm gonna pave the way for all my local brothers so when they come up they are gonna remember me as someone who paved the way for them.
KMA-Do you fight exclusively or do you have side jobs?
Taurus- I got my degrees. I got a degree in AutoCAD, computer architectural design, I went to college for 6 years. So that’s why it took me so long to get into the world of MMA, because of schooling and I had some other set backs but I’m here now. I’m with the mason’s union, I’m a tile setter. I’m also a carpenter. I have other traits, I’m a professional musician as well.
KMA- After your fighting career is over what would you like to do. Would you like to open up your own gym?
Taurus-Opening up my own gym is something that I thought about. I really love my music, I’m a musician. I believe that music tames the beast in all men. I’m thinking about making albums and checking out bradah Kaina (Costa). Besides the music I just had a baby too, I never told anyone this but I’m 30 years old and I got my first son. You know I’m going to be a good father and I want to teach him what I learned. I love kids and I love working with them.
KMA- Taurus you grew up with a lot of adversity, what would you like to say to these kids?
Taurus- Don’t give up before the miracle, the miracle is right there, it’s just waiting brah. Life is about 2 things, goals and dreams. Without that we have no life. So don’t give up before the miracle.
KMA-Anything else you would like to say for the martial arts fans in Hawaii and Kauai?
Taurus- I would like to thank all my family, my friends, the people that supported me all through my life, even the people who doubted me, I’d like to give you a shout out because without doubt I don’t know that I’d have enough energy to strive forward. So both positive and negative there is always something good that comes about of everything. To the island of Kauai I’d like to send out all my love and Aloha to everyone, and if I have offended anyone in the past I’m sorry and I’m like to make amends. I’d like to make a shout out to my pops who passed away, Harold Cabbab. My Step dad who passed away Franklin Iwai, also to a very beautiful woman who passed away Rae Hookano, uncle Kaleo Hookano. I love you very much.
